I took these shots early in the morning with the idea of
catching the early sun illuminating the north side of the building. I'm not
really pleased with the results: in many respects an exercise in frustration.
One problem I did anticipate: the trees make it hard to get a good angle
on the building anymore. But there were several problems I did not anticipate:
- The weather was not exactly cooperating: clouds hid the sunrise, and they show up
even in some of the later shots.
- The morning sun (when it did shine) created stark shadows,
and the glare from the white building made exposures really hard to get right;
even the automatic exposure was fooled.
- But despite the glare, the early light was not strong illumination,
so the contrast between building and sky was hard to get right.
- The sloping ground meant I was
constantly having to adjust the tripod, and I now understand that not all tripods
are created equal! Feeling pressed for time (so as not to lose the northerly
illumination) and finding the tripod difficult to adjust properly,
I didn't pay enough attention to getting the horizontal true.
- Because the trees block the view so much,
several shots were taken relatively close with a wide-angle setting — which
creates its own characteristic distortion and makes the vertical lines noticeably
non-parallel.
Getting a good shot of the building has turned into a real challenge!
Below are what I think are the best shots, some of them "photo-shopped" a bit.
